Related Instruction at Highline College

What is Related Instruction?

Any certificate or degree program of 45 credits or more must include a recognizable body of instruction in program-related areas which consist of: 1) Communication, 2) Computation and 3) Human Relations

Prof-Tech programs have related instruction requirements. The list of the courses that qualify is found in this module. If you think your course should qualify, please apply with this link.

Related Instruction is “a recognizable body of at least six-semester credits or nine quarter credits, or identified equivalent in-depth and quality of learning, in program‐related areas of communication, computation, and human relations for applied or specialized associate degree or certificate programs of 30-semester credits or 45 quarter credits in length.” – NWCCU Accreditation Handbook, September 2020 Update

 

Qualifying for Related Instruction

Starting in Fall 2021, the Assessment Committee will support Academic Affairs by documenting all Related Instruction courses and sharing qualifications. To better support the needs of students, all courses will need to be approved to qualify as Related Instruction.

Related Instruction courses for Communication must demonstrate at least 2 of the following outcomes for students:

  • Demonstrate understanding of language, conventions, or symbols in context.
  • Use contextually appropriate language, conventions or symbols.
  • Organize ideas and concepts clearly and logically.
  • Effectively presents and delivers ideas, concepts or information using non-verbal, non-printed techniques

Related Instruction courses for Computation must demonstrate at least 2 of the following outcomes for students:

  • Apply learning in familiar and new contexts.
  • Use appropriate methods of inquiry/exploration to achieve and evaluate a result.
  • Support claims with evidence.
  • Identify and demonstrate an understanding of issues, problems, and perspectives.

Related Instruction courses for Human Relations must demonstrate at least 2 of the following outcomes for students:

  • Identify and demonstrate an understanding of the value of equity, inclusion and diverse perspectives.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Recognize and analyze ethical behavior.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and responsibility.

Applying for Related Instruction Designation

How to Apply:

If your program feels that a course in your department satisfies the Related Instruction requirements above, please apply using this link.

After You Have Applied:

You will be notified of whether your course has been approved for Related Instruction via email. If approved, you will be permitted to check the “Related Instruction” box in Curriculog for the approved course. If the course is not approved, you can re-apply once outcomes are aligned with the Related Instruction qualifications above. If you need help aligning your student outcomes with Related Instruction requirements, please schedule a time to meet with the Assessment Committee by emailing to assessment@highline.edu.
